A Laughter Club is a time and place to laugh for no reason other than to enjoy the health and wellness benefits of laughter. They originated with only 5 people in a public park in Mumbai, India by Dr. Madan Kataria in 1995. Now it's a worldwide laughter movement with over 6000 clubs in 60 countries.
The basic premise is that laughter is exercise and serves to benefit your health and wellness in numerous ways. Benefits of laughter include:
- a cardiovascular and respiratory workout
- muscle relaxation
- stimulation of the immune system
- a boost in mental function
- a shift in perspective helping you see situations in a new light
- an opportunity to create intimate social bonds with others
Each Laughter Club session includes deep breathing exercises, stretching and a variety of laughter exercises facilitated by the Laughter Club Leader. The Laughter Club Leader will facilitate the session in a "3-D" fashion, first Describing the laughter exercise, then Demonstrating the exercise, and finally calling out a '1, 2, 3 ...' to Do the laughter exercise. Participants are encouraged to make eye contact with each other to stimulate the contagious effect of laughing. It's about simulating the laughter to stimulate real, genuine hearty laughter.
